Usually airbag connectors include small ferrite cores in their terminals (a single ferrite or some of them). This hardware allows to detect their presence without any electrical contact with the wiring harness, even if the connector has several ferrites and only one of them is missing.
The detection depends on the physical parameters of the connector and the ferrite cores, so a preliminary study is required for every new project.
